Job description: The word 'tool' probably conjures up images of hammers, pipe wrenches and screwdrivers. These are certainly important tools, but as a toolmaking mechanic you'll be working with quite different tools. Once you get started, you'll develop specialist tools for the production line where precision is absolutely essential. During your apprenticeship you'll learn all the processes that go into toolmaking, such as machine drilling, sawing, grinding, turning and milling – also using computer-controlled machines. You'll install complex tools, test their functioning and then pass them on to the production line.
